David: Called to Action
1 Samuel 16- 2 Samuel 2
Fall 2005
Synopsis:
God has a goal in mind
in choosing David to reign as king. The Israelites lost their sense of
call to God’s mission during the period of the
Judges, where everyone did what was right in their own eyes. God had originally
called Abraham and his family to be a blessing to all the families of the
earth (Gen 12); and then through Moses, God called those saved from Egyptian
slavery to be a priestly kingdom and a holy nation (Exod 19). Somewhere between
Sinai and the Promised Land, the people forgot their charge and assumed the
blessing of God for themselves alone. To restore the faltering charge, God
called David to lead a people into a renewed mission. As God called David,
so God calls Geneva church to a renewed mission, to be a blessing to all
the families of the earth and to be a priestly kingdom to the community around
us. As with David, when God calls, God equips and directs his people to his
greater glory.

Text: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Sermon: God Calls to Action
Sermon Text: 16:12 “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.”

in choosing David to act as king. Sept. 11 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf

Sermon Text: 16:17 “Provide for me someone who can play well, and bring
him to me.”

and he tried in vain to walk . . .”

Sermon: Success is Always Threatened
Sermon Text: 19:2 “My father Saul is trying to kill you.”
Focus:
When David sets out to respond to God, he finds that Saul opposes him, attempting
time and again to kill him. Even Jesus, the Son of God, finds that both
Satan and Jesus’ own disciples oppose him. When we respond to God,
we encounter opposition both from the enemies of God and from the faithful. Oct. 16 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf

Sermon: God Helps the Threatened
Sermon Text: 19:20 “The spirit of God came upon the messengers
of Saul, and they also fell into a prophetic frenzy.”
Focus:

Focus:
When David flees from Saul, he finds sustenance from Ahimelech, the priest
of Nob. The priest feeds David with the bread of the Presence, that which
had been in the presence of the LORD. Just as with David, God will equip

Sermon: Called to Honor
Sermon Text: 24:6 “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my
lord.”
Focus:
David has a chance to kill Saul, and thus bring an end to Saul’s persecution.
But David chooses to honor God, who has called Saul, even when Saul’s
actions have been destructive. We find our calling not in calculating our
desires, but in honoring the irrevocable call of God. Nov. 6 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf

Text: 1 Sam 25:2-3, 32-35, 39
Sermon: Called to Listen
Sermon Text: 25:35 “I have heeded your voice, and I have granted your
petition.”
Focus:
Nabal (the fool) has insulted David’s men, who have provided protection
for the shepherds over Nabal’s flock. David plans to take revenge upon
Nabal until Nabal’s wife Abigail prevails over David’s rash judgment.
We like David are called to listen to the wise counsel of others before we
rush to judgment. Nov. 13 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. [Back to Top]

Text: 1 Sam 27:1-7
Sermon: Called to Recalculate
Sermon Text: 27:1 “There is nothing better for me than to escape to
the land of the Philistines.”
Focus:
David has to rethink his calling after Saul is determined to kill him. David
must have wondered whether God had truly called him, given the opposition
that he now faced. In response, David walks through the only door open
to him, to flee to the Philistines. We too must make adjustments when we
see no other alternative. Nov. 20 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format.

Sermon: Forcing a Call
Sermon Text: 28:6 “When Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not
answer him.”
Focus:
Saul, aware that the LORD had left him in order to call David, tries to force
God’s hand by resorting to witchcraft. We too at times attempt to
force the hand of God. This story is a sobering warning that we can stray
from the call of God. Nov. 27 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. [Back to Top]

Text: 1 Sam 30:1-6
Sermon: Challenged from Within
Sermon Text: 30:6 “David was in great danger; for the people spoke
of stoning him.”
Focus:
David makes a tactical mistake in abandoning the town of Ziklag. When he
returns he finds that enemies have attacked. As a result, David’s
soldiers turn on him. He now has to respond to opposition from within.
We too find that trouble arises not from enemies out there, but from well
meaning people of our own tribe.

Text: 1 Sam 30:11, 15-20
Sermon: Responding to the Challenge
Sermon Text: 30:18 “David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken.”
Focus:
When challenged, David did not strike out at his accusers. He heard their
complaints and devised a plan to redress the mistakes he had made. We do
well to listen to our accusers and plan accordingly to fix our mistakes.

Sermon: God Fulfills the Call
Sermon Text: 2:4a “Then the people of Judah came and there they anointed
David king.”
Focus:
God had called David to be king; but it was a long journey from call to fulfillment.
David had to pursue the call and deal with opposition before he finally
became king. God’s call on our lives is irrevocable, yet at the same
time our task to fulfill. We must work out our salvation with fear and
trembling, for it God who is at work in us. Dec. 18 Sermon in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format.

Luke’s Gospel: Called to Witness
Winter 2006
Synopsis:
Luke, the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts, has a goal in mind. He understands Jesus as calling disciples for the purpose of mission. The Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts begin with the same prologue, to Theophilus; furthermore, the Gospel of Luke ends and the Book of Acts begins with the same charge, that the disciples are Jesus’ witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth. Luke tells us that the gathered disciples, the church, does not have a missions program but is a mission, defined as those who are sent by Jesus into the world.

Isaiah 40-66: Called as a Light to the Nations
Spring 2006
Synopsis:
In the latter chapters of the Book of Isaiah (40-66), God calls the devastated and exiled people to come home and be a light to the nations. God has punished Israel for neglecting both the call to her God and also to her charge to be a blessing to all the families of the earth and a holy priesthood to the nations. In these latter chapters we learn how God plans to use his covenant people to renew and fulfill this call.
How to start all over again...
At one time or another each of us crashes and burns.
Israel crashed and burned during the 6th century BC,
but God was not finished with his people.
They began again through the encouragement of the prophet Isaiah.
Maybe you need to begin again.
Come hear encouraging words from God who says,
"Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people."
Learn how God can make rivers run in the desert of your life.
